I grew up in a working-class neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Since I came from such an unnatural place, I didn’t develop an interest in the Earth Sciences until later in life.
Eventually I ended up living in Indiana and going to Indiana University for a B.S. in Geoscience. These days, I try to maintain a few hobbies outside of work:
I started hiking to get better at field geology – I liked it more than I expected.
Prior to grad school, I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail:
108 Days, 2192 Miles, May-August 2015
Lately I’ve been making lots of ice cream, trying out new flavors, and refining my skills. The hiking helps to burn some of it off thankfully.
The photo is not my ice cream, but it’s something to aspire to. I’m getting there, slowly but surely.
I have written a couple thousand pages of short fiction (mostly short stories and novellas).
Anton Chekhov is my favorite author.
